Got a Need for Speed?

As we approach the end of the quarter, we typically see an increase in requests for rush review. While we understand that timelines and competing priorities can shift quickly, rush reviews are generally reserved for situations involving participant safety, imminent funding deadlines, or other circumstances outside of the research team’s control.

We aim to review submissions as efficiently and fairly as possible for all researchers. Rush requests can affect the review queue for teams who planned their submissions in advance, so we appreciate your thoughtful use of rush review requests.

A Taxing Update

The IRB has updated language related to research payments and the issuance of a Form 1099 in the 2018 Common Rule Compliant Consent Form Template. The revised language no longer includes a specific dollar amount for when UC Davis is required to issue a Form 1099, since federal thresholds will now change over time.

  • For new studies and consent form updates, use the current consent form template language.
  • For approved studies where participants received payments in 2026 but re-consenting participants with an updated consent form is not practicable, we have made a Research Payments and Tax Reporting Notice available for use on our Forms webpage. Researchers must document that this notice was provided to participants in lieu of re-consent.

If external sites are relying on the UC Davis IRB, share this information with the relying sites and confirm whether any site-specific payment language is needed. If relying sites have questions, ask them to contact [email protected].

You’ve Got Mail… But Is It Going to the Right Place?

Researchers who recently migrated to an @health.ucdavis.edu email address should update the email address listed in their IRBNet User Profile. Keeping your IRBNet contact information current helps ensure you continue to receive important IRBNet notifications, correspondence, and project updates.

To update your email address, log in to IRBNet and go to your User Profile. From there, update the email address on file to your current @health.ucdavis.edu address.

Don’t “Say Less”

When submitting a modification, please explain why the proposed change is needed, not just what is changing.

Repeating the description of the modification in the rationale field may result in requests for clarification and can delay review. Providing brief context about the reason for the change helps reviewers better understand the modification and assess it more efficiently.

Donate a Protocol, Support Better Tools

Researchers are invited to support a University of Virginia (UVA) and National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) project developing an open-source AI chatbot to help draft IRB protocols. The research team is seeking donations of already-approved IRB protocols, active or closed, from academic researchers. To learn more or contribute, please complete the data donation form.

FAQs

Does this change to my study require IRB review?

Not every study change requires IRB review prior to implementation. Some changes may qualify as administrative modifications that can be implemented without submitting a modification to the IRB. For a list of administrative modifications, check out our Modifications webpage.
